Bowls: Cherry Whatsit

I call this one "Whatsit". Most of the time I begin a piece with a clear idea in mind of what I want the finished product to be. In this case, I started turning with a blank of spalted cherry that otherwise would be stove-bound due to several large cracks that made conventional shapes unlikely.

Sometimes it's fun just to see what the wood wants to be and in this piece it couldn't make up it's mind. The underside (the foot) is actually a small bowl if turned over. Whatever it is, it's become a great conversation piece.
